The population of Fort Gaines is 1,100 + according to the latest census in 2000. The population of Clay County as a whole is 3,390.

From the central business district, which runs along Hancock Street and Washington Street (and covers all of 2 acres) to the outlying farms that blanket much of the surrounding area, Fort Gaines is a small town in the truest sense.
